CONDITIONS REPORT: Winter hike in the Cedarburg Bog

It looks great for our hike today.  Here is the update now:  There will be no standing water over the ice.  The ice will be slick with a little slushy snow on top.

• We will have good, solid, safe ice for our hike to Long and Donut Lakes on February 2.
• Some warm days, but nights below freezing, are forecasted for this week and the ice is thick.
• Unless we get substantial snow, the trail will be very slick ice on Sunday.  Some type of ice cleats will be essential for safety if you can’t afford to fall.
• We will evaluate the chance of precipitation later in the week but will likely hike regardless of some snow or light rain.
• Dress for the weather and stay on the main trail.   Safety glasses or sunglasses are always recommended for walking in the Bog.
• We are in for a beautiful and memorable hike in our amazing wetland as long as we are dressed for the conditions!

Winter presents the opportunity to explore the interior of the Cedarburg Bog.   Jim Reinartz (Saukville Field Station Director Emeritus) will lead the annual hike into the heart of the Bog. This is a 4-mile hike, and weather or snow and ice conditions can make this hike challenging.  In the past we have hiked in bitter cold, on a warm day with wet slush over the ice, in deep snow, with no snow at all on very slick ice, and when we were lucky, with a little snow over solid ice.  If ice conditions in the Bog are not safe, we will hike in the uplands instead.  The Saukville Field Station website (https://uwm.edu/field-station/about/news/) will be updated several days prior to the hike with snow and ice conditions.

The Friends of the Cedarburg Bog are hosting a Chili Dinner Potluck after the Winter Hike at 4:30pm. The Friends will have lots of chili ready as well as beverages. Bring a dish to share (side dish, salad, dessert) all are appreciated and enjoyed! It’s a wonderful way to finish up the hike but please join us for the potluck even if you don’t plan to hike.
