Boardwalk Renovations
When the Field Station’s boardwalk in the Bog was constructed in the early 2000s, posts or pilings were used as supports wherever it was reasonable to drive posts through the peat and muck to the underlying mineral material. While this design seemed logical, those posts alternately heaved and sank over the winters since the walk was constructed. A novel “outrigger” design with the Boardwalk supported by the mat of vegetation proved to be a much more stable and workable design.

New boardwalk outriggers being installed
Over recent years, all the original post supports had been replaced by outrigger supports except for 14 sections in two places that were still on posts. These 14 sections were badly heaved and increasingly unstable. FOCB volunteers installed outrigger supports on all these sections in late October. FOCB also purchased the materials for the project and constructed the outriggers. Thank you to Mike Hennig, Alex Mann, Brian Morrison, Jim Winnemuller, and Jim Reinartz for getting this project done.

Our boardwalk repair crew. Thank you!
