An amazing night in the Bog; stay tuned for another
In case you weren't able to join us on short notice to listen to the frogs on March 22, here's some good news: We plan to offer you another opportunity.
Here's a report from Kate Redmond, secretary of the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog, on how the event went and how it came about:
"When the Events Committee met, before the recent warmup, we put an April 23 frog hike on the calendar. Last week, Field Station Director Jim Reinartz and I were each listening to masses of wood frogs calling from our vantage points, and decided we had to have a hike NOW! So, we changed the newsletter and the post card to say that the hike(s) would be spontaneous and announced in an email blast. We'll try to do another in two weeks or so. Anyway - it was an amazing night.
"Woodcocks, a Robin-sized shorebird, called and danced enthusiastically for 17 participants in the Friends'March 22nd Woodcock and Frog Night Hike. The group heard at least 7 birds from one spot, with several woodcocks spiraling right overhead during their sky dance.
"We heard a single leopard frog and gray tree frog and a number of wood frogs, but night belonged to the spring peepers. Calling from shallow water at the edge of the Bog, they were deafening. Those of us who hung around and talked and looked at stars also heard a few toads trilling."
